At 15 minutes of boil remaining, I dropped a Whirlfloc Tablet and BOOM! I have a 10 gallon kettle boiling 5 gallons (leaving 5 gallons of headspace). When the Whirlfloc Tablet hit, the kettle foamed up and filled the entire headspace. I had to wait 10 minutes for the headspace to settle down before making my late-addition hops.
Thankfully, I didn't add the hops immediatly prior to the Whirlfloc. Otherwise, the hop particles would have been taken up in the foam and deposited along the interior surface of the kettle. So obviously, the hops need to be added after the Whirlfloc Tablet.
So I can't add hops prior to the Whirlfloc (otherwise the hops will be taken up in the foam), and I have to wait 10 minutes after the Whirlfloc for the foam to settle down.
Therefore, I'm avoiding any late hop additions except after the Whirlfloc, which suggests I'm limited to the 5-minute mark and whirlpool. Anyone else see this?
