Controlling flow on Wort Pumps

Does it matter where I decide to install flow restrictors on my wort pump? Can I just use the gate valve at the HLT to control the flow or should it be at the other end??

You need to control flow on the output end of the pump to avoid the pump head from running dry.

always control flow at the output of your pump. you dont want to run the risk of running your pump dry.

think I've read you want the put anything which restricts flow after the pump, to prevent cavitation in the pump

edit: and yes, prevent running it dry

2nd edit: I've always viewed cavitation as lots of little bubbles. came from learning the term as it applies to surface ship and submarine propellers. I guess it can also mean one big bubble, i.e. running dry
