Hello all, I am in the process of buying a Conical Fermenter. Would that be a problem to use it at half capacity? I mean that the price between the 40 and the 50 liters is no very high. I want to maximize my option if i decide to brew bigger batch.

Would there be a problem to use it with a 30 liters batch? (If necessary i would fill it with CO2 before to minimize oxidation)

Thanks

That's fine. I use a 25 gallon conical and have fermented 9 gallons in it before. The naturally produced co2 covers the beer and fills the extra space.

No problem at all. At the beginning of fermentation your yeast actually need some oxygen so no worries there. Fermentation will produce lots of carbon dioxide that will blanket your beer and protect it afterwards. The extra space will also help in case the kräusen takes off like crazy.

Just need to throw this out there - if you're referring to a MoreBeer! Heated and Cooled Conical, you'll need to fill it to the recommended batch size :)

Cooling units don't operate correctly unless they're covering your fermenting wort!

Cheers
