I just read an article of someone local who died from exposure to fumes from liquid nitrogen. It got me thinking about our setups at home with ten pound co2 or nitrogen tanks. If a major leak were to occur, like a busted hose, would the amount of gas from either co2 or nitrogen be enough to cause asphyxiation? I have my keezer in the basement of the house. I've been trying to search the Internet but I haven't had much luck. I would assume if there was a real risk there would be workplace safety information for bars and restaurants that dispense kegged beers right?

As far as i can tell, no, not a problem. A 20lb tank of co2 can hold about 175 cubic feet of co2 at room temp and 1 atmosphere. Even in a small 10x10 room 175cf would only fill up 1 3/4 feet high. In your basement thats even less of a problem.

Someone correct me if my math is wrong but it seems pretty straight forward to me from what i googled.

You're spot on.

While it shouldnt be a problem i still always treat it all like it still can cause issues. I keep my co2 in my kegerator and my golden rule is to open the door and let it air out for 30 seconds before i stick my head in there to adjust the regulators. I also keep most of my industrial welding bottles in a place that can be well vented when i use them. But that is just me. I like to keep even my small 5 lb co2 bottles in places that are not small such as closets.
