In the past I had a spare garage full size fridge that I used for carboy temp control and some lagers. I have a Johnson Controls controller and it was spot on last time I used it.
The reason I'm asking these questions is I burnt the last fridge's compressor up or at least I suspect it died early.
This may have been due to a few factors:
1) It was in the garage (Not in a cold state)
2) It was 8+ years old before I got it
My new fridge is going to be in the house. Also it is new not sure if that is always a good thing but at least there will be a warranty. It's a little 4.4 cf with no freezer. I only need enough room for one carboy at a time so it will fit the bill nicely.
And now for the questions:
1) How should I set the tolerance? Tight during active fermentation and loose after or keep it 1deg swing the whole time? Maybe 3deg or 5deg - I know this depends on the yeast strain but for target temps in the past I always stuck to 1deg and that may have been my downfall.
2) Do most of you put the controller probe on the fermenter with heat shielded tape?
Thanks in advance for all the help - Cheers
