Hi, I am new to this and was wondering if I could collect yeast from a bottle of wine that i bought from a grocery store. I added some of the wine into a glass with some sugar and oats for nutrients. Will this work? I know some wineries pasteurizer there pasteurized and kill the yeast but it didn't say anywhere on the bottle that it was pasteurized.

I've never seen yeast sediment in a commercial wine bottle. I would think that most (if not all) wineries filter their wine.

I've seen a few "wine diamonds" in good commercial wines, but that's excess tartaric acid that has precipitated out.

So, in short, no, I doubt you'd be sucessful. Of course, wine yeast is $.59 cents/pack so it's not expensive to purchase some.
