So a second cousin gave me a bunch of brewing equipment, among them two 2.5-gal American Sankey ball-lock kegs. Is there any way to empty/clean/fill them without buying expensive equipment, or if unavoidable, what equipment do I need?

sankey and ball lock refer to different things. But both can be cleaned.

With a sankey keg it's a bit difficult but you can remove the spear.

Ball lock kegs are easy they have a removable lid and all the fittings unscrew easily.

If they are 2.5 gallon ball lock kegs remove the lids and disassemble the in & out posts and clean everything (oxyclean free works great). If the gaskets are worn out replace them (3 bucks for a whole kit to do a keg). Then buy some starsan and use it to do the final sanitation no rinse needed. Good luck! :mug:

Hot water and oxyclean free (without perfumes) or PBW. Soak overnight, shake the hell out of it the next day, then empty and rinse, preferrably with a sprayer and hot water. Mine are always pristine after this.

By "ball lock" do you mean they have a ball in the center?

To clarify do they look like this.
