El Catador Club

Based on member feedback we've decided to extend the El Catador Club 8th Edition renewal window through the end of October. That means El Catador 7th Edition members will now have until midnight (EDT) October 31st to join the ECC 8th Edition.

Not a current member but interested in joining the club? You can join our membership lottery here: http://bit.ly/catadorlottery

We will begin announcing lottery winners in November.

I went ahead and continued my membership. I won't stand in lines for beer so this is an easy and convenient way to pick up solid BA beers without wasting hours sitting outside in the heat. I'll gladly pony up cash for that reason alone.

The price was always pushing it imho, but you did get some very good beers along the way. My main issues were the price went up again and the beers you get are 100% random. You might get a BA Hunah variant other times a pumpkin beer. There are just too many good beers out there to pony up that kinda cash to essentially play the lottery every single round. That being said being a local it makes a lot more sense to renew.

BigGene Can anything be said about what beers are being targeted for Edition 8? I know beers cannot be guaranteed (ready when/if they are ready), but I think some hints on upcoming beers/styles will help a lot (at least for me) in deciding what level to buy at. For example, I’m fine with loads of stouts & barleywines, but less inclined to get lots of sours.

They are doing a really good job of not letting that info out. The barrel storage area is now off limits on the tours so its a toss up. No clue.

Partially why I will keep renewing. Not that I won't wait in lines, but there's a cost to waiting in a line every time a beer is released, and I chalk it up to paying for the convenience of not having to do that.

Same here - I'd be happy to listen to the constant complaints by 90% of the members to have a whole bunch of BABWs next round.

I think the complaints are valid. We’re asked to cough up $$$ for beers they won’t describe. Most things I buy in life, I’m told what is beforehand. If its a legal thing, they can always include a disclaimer that these beers are not guaranteed. I do understand the cost & bottle increase as their capacity expands (easier to run 2 bigger rounds per year than 3 smaller ones), but I don’t understand the secrecy.

Im amazed that ive made it this long ignoring/avoiding this club. Ive tossed my name into the hat and hoping to get picked.

Those beers you guys got this last round, yikes...id have some serious movement in my loins over any variation of MZ or hunnypoopoo let alone both.

I think the secrecy is because they have a lot of beer in barrels and they don't know which ones will turn out the way they want. They have a tentative timeline of seven beers every six months, so if they say "we'll give you four stouts, two barleywines, and one sour" and one of those stouts turns out terribly and they don't want to release it, they need to adjust the timeline which screws everything up.

There are a few beers released that were not my favorite, but for me the benefits of not waiting in line for BA Huna, BA Zhukov, Decoherence, etc. have far outweighed the stinky beers or those I may have disliked. I have a wide range of preferred styles, so I'll take a stout, barleywine, porter, sour, etc. with a smile and if I don't think I'll like one of the styles, I'll bring it to a share so we can all laugh at how bad it is.

I get the secrecy - and it's always been an experimental club. We're not guaranteed anything except whatever beer is released was in a barrel at some point and the brewers executed to a level of success they defined for that beer. I'm sure at some point I'll not renew just because I don't have the time or patience or money or maybe it won't be worth it to me anymore. Until then, I'll happily renew because it's a convenient way to get great (overall) beer.

I guess they must have a ton of member slots to fill cuz i got the invite/payment request.

Whelp, got a "youre in" email click the link to sing up "product not found" looking like another hoax email from them. WTF haha

same happened to me, you have to sign in first.

Myself and about 6 friends got the email. I'm guessing a combo of people dropping out plus them adding more spots.

Yeah, was able to get it once I logged in. Strange they don't mention that in the email.

Reading through this thread has me all but ready to decline my membership lottery win. Is there anyone out there who is, like, still really stoked on El Cat?

I'm not as excited as I used to be, but I still really enjoy when the release emails come out. I'm not sure what they have planned, but last session was one of the best they've ever had, which is 100% the reason I renewed.
