Hey guys I'm ready for my next batch which is going to be a Chinook IPA. I was just going to brew the recipe they gave me but a guy at work grows his own hops and isn't brewing anymore so he gave me basically a shopping bag full of Cascades. Since I need to use them in something I was planning on using the Cascades with my Chinook IPA.

So a few questions, are Chinook and Cascade a good combination together? Where should I use my Cascades? I was planning on using them to dryhop but I didn't know if I should use any in the boil anywhere as well. My Chinook IPA recipe wants me to dryhop with Chinook. Should I dryhop with both? Should I take out the Chinook and only use the Cascades to dryhop?

The recipe is:
0.75 lbs Caramel Pils
0.25 lbs Breiss Caramel 120
6 lbs Pilsnen malt syrup
1 lb Pilsen DME

1oz Chinook (60 min)
.5oz Chinook (10 min)
.5oz Chinook (1 min)
1oz Chinook (Dryhop)

What and where can I add/subtract my Chinook and Cascade hops. Anything would be appreciated, thanks!

Chinook/cascade is a great combo. Personally, I love hops. I would put 1.5-2ozs. of cascade in @ flameout with the chinook, and then another 1.5 ozs. in dry with the chinook. It will taste wonderful-believe me.

I'm sitting here drinking an APA hopped with .75oz chinook+1oz. of cascade+.5oz. of columbus@ flameout, along with 1oz. of simcoe+.5oz. cascade dry hopped. Delicious!

I love hops too! I didn't know what it would be like to dryhop with both of them. It's also only 41 IBU's. I kind of wanted to get it up a little more but didn't know if I should or not

Only the Casecade are whole leaf and fresh. I dried them about 2 weeks ago and they are currently in my freezer. The Chinook are in pellet form from Northern Brewer

The dry hop and flameout additions will not add any IBUs. Those late additions will only add flavor/aroma. I add a ton of late hops to my hoppy brews. I reccomended adding those cascades late because you don't know what IBU they are and the late additions won't matter.

For an IPA, you should try to match your last 2 gravity #s with IBUs.
EX: 1.060OG= add 60IBUs of bitterness.

I like to add 1/2 of my IBUs at 60mins, and the remaining at 15mins to get flavor out of them.

I know that. I was thinking maybe if I added only the Cascades at flameout instead of both, I could use that extra .5oz to add more bittering. I'll probably just keep it how it is.

Thanks, I didn't know that about the gravity. Beer Alchemy says the OG is supposed to be 1.055. The IBU's are 42.

That's kind of what I figured but decided I should check in just in case. I'm still a noob, this will be my third batch and very excited about this one
