have been lurking and cant find the answer to a question. I am new to homebrewing but already want a kegerator. I think the best option for me is a short appliance with a tower on top. A chest freezer will be the easiest thing to find but it seems like a tower on a chest freezer would be difficult to deal with. Seems you would have to move the freezer everytime you wanted to open it or else the tower would have to be removable. How do yall deal with this. I have seen a few collars but dont really like the look.

The main reason that people use the collar is so that they dont have to drill through the side of the freezer and risk hitting a coolant line. If you put a hole in one of them the whole unit is worthless. The other reason is that some freezers are not deep enough so they need the extra clearance. If you already had the clearance and didnt mind risking hitting a line than I dont see any problem with just installing it through the wall. Other than that you could just use cobra taps and leave them in the freezer so you wouldnt need to install anything.

Do you have a spare closet? I put mine in the closet and ran the taps through the wall, nice and clean.

how do you deal with the tower on top and opening and closing the lid. Especially if near a wall you would not be able to open without either moving the unit or removing tab.

Wow, I thought something completely different when I read the title of this thread...

he he,

oh, nevermind...

wrong section.

I used a metal hole saw to cut the top of my chest freezer. And I drilled a hole threw the side of the cheast freezer for gas line and temp probe. Just turn the unit on for a few minutes with the lid closed. get a spray bottle with water and spray the area with water it will freeze on the coils just under the metal panel to out line where the coils are. then start with a small drill bit and keep making the hole larger till you can fit your lines use a small piece of automotive heater hose as a seal and keep the sharp metal from cutting anything. But keep checking for hidden lines as you go.
