I was looking into some ways to upgrade my system without going broke or making the wife mad. I can across some polyethylene food barrels. I was thinking about using it for a mash tun at first but it it's only rated for up to 120°F so I thought it would be perfect to turn into a fermenter. With an air tight lid and also BPA free
I haven't purchased it yet because still deciding on size I want to upgrade to.
The 55 gallon drum runs about 77$

I've used them for fermenting wine in. Fill with water and sugar to target gravity add fruit in grain bag, add yeast and aerate. Cover with towel or cloth and stir every day for a week, remove fruit seal lid and drill hole in bung to fit airlock. Check every couple of days and sort of rock barrel to mix. In about 15 to 30 days fermentation is complete take hydrometer reading and let settle for a few more weeks. I siphon to bottling bucket and bottle or lately to keg for aging.

I'm not sure how this will work for beer though.

These do make great fermenters. There's a small local brewery that used to use these. But check craigslist, the prices there range from $20 to free.
