Hello everyone. Name is Frank. I have been following my best friends journey into Home Brewing for a couple months and he shocked me with a starter kit for Christmas. I have always loved trying every beer I could get may hands on (only one regret was in 1992 a $7 dollar case of bottles called "Lion's Head") so I was pretty excited to get into home brewing. I have my first batch started, it is fermenting (Amber Ale, came with the kit) and will be doing my first bottling next Tuesday. So far the info on hear has been great. I am originally from the Philly area and know of supply stores there but any suggestion around Woodbridge NJ are welcomed.

Welcome, LHBS are kind of scarce in these parts. Brewer's Apprentice in freehold is a brew on premises that also sells supplies. Corrados in clifton, never been but I hear they cater more to wine.

Gaslight Pub in West Orange sells some homebrew stuff, but you have to call ahead and tell them what you want. That's a haul too, though.

Well, I'm going to give you the typical sales pitch for checking out The WHALES Homebrewing Club, Woodbridge, NJ that meets every 3rd Tuesday in the upstairs dining room of JJ Bitting in Woodbridge. Hey, you're certainly close enough.
I do most of my buying online because I'm exactly an hour from almost every HBS around me. There's Corrado's in Clifton (no good selection), Keystone Hombrew in Lehigh Valley, PA, Brewer's apprentice Freehold, NJ and Princeton Homebrew in Trenton. 80 miles RT cost me more than shipping.

Well, prices are typical of local shops I think. Grain is $2 a pound a across the board which is definitely too much for any base grains but only slightly too much for specialties. It's not that any other local place is better but I'd plan ahead and buy your next three recipes from an online supplier if cost is a concern.

Personally, I think their prices are pretty good! Bulk extract is $75 for a jerry can. That's pretty much going rate on the HB websites I've visist. The little things (airlocks, stoppers, etc.) seem very inexpensive to me. Since I'm a partial masher, I never really spent much time analyzing grain prices.
The owner is a really nice guy and very patient with all my noob questions. That's worth a lot to me.
