You buyin' me a present? ;)

Both the 2009 LPG and 2007 OGV were bottled on 12/27
A special day for lambic. Its also JVR's birthday.

My birthday is 12/28. JVR bottled some Kriek on my 30th birthday (12/28/2015), which was perfect because I was easily able to acquire it, and never have to think about it again!

Weyerbacher Insanity bottled 12/2013. While there was some butterscotch/toffee in the barleywine base, this was mostly all mellowed out bourbon barrel. So much that it should of been labeled as "bourbon barrel ale." For those of you that like cellaring boozy barrel aged beers, you might enjoy these after a few years.

2008 North Coast Old Stock Ale

This is the second year of Old Stock I "cellared" back when I first got into beer. Always remember people like flexabull on BA recommending this one and I definitely don't regret saving the mixed case for all these years.

This is starting to oxidize a bit (even though I waxed it back when I though it could make a difference), but in the best way possible for my palate. No head, the slightest bit of carb left when I gave it a rousing pour. Taste and smell are dates, raisins, and fading caramel with hardly a trace of the 12.5% abv. Reminds of of JW Lees but not quite a syrupy in the mouthfeel. I always bought these 4-packs when they went on sale for <$10, so for a $2.5 beer I think this has done a great job shoved in my closet for 10years! Happy to have a few more 07-09 tucked away.

That thing is beautiful! The bottle and the pour. Predates me being 21!

I am really terrible about remembering to post here after dipping into cellar goodies....

This was from last month:

2010 Upland Dantalion Dark Wild Ale

A very pleasant experience with this despite being 7.5 years old. Very flanders-like with notes of sour cherry and earthen almost floral quality still remaining from the dantalion. The oak was evident with a vanilla sweetness. This showed no signs of oxidation for its age and overall was pleasantly tart and very drinkable - not excessively sour at all.

And here is a trifecta of Freetail bottles I was sitting on for ~7 years

Old Bat Rastard
This was pretty interesting. A wee heavy of sorts with raison, currants and molasses wrapped up in a buttery and dusty grain blanket with hints of cidery appeal. This was tasting its age yet remained enjoyable.

The Old Bat Rastard’s barrel aged counterpart did not hold up as well. She was infected with notes of vinegar and stanky cheese.

Fortuna Roja was a show stopper. Everyone I shared this with really enjoyed it. Fruity and vinous tartness with soft hint of oak. Really nice stuff, would never have guessed it was 7 years old.

Fortuna was one of my all time favorite beers. Good to hear its holding up.

Deschutes The Abyss - 2012

The wax on this has gone to the point of no return, crumbling like feta cheese. The beer itself has devolved into sweet malt & sweet licorice, with a whisper of oak & hint of the wine barrel. There might be molasses on the finish, or it might just be on the label, & an extension of the malts.

That malt base was always one of the beers best traits. Still is. Might be better than fresh now that the cherry bark is gone, but it has lost barely a half-step. A wonderfully aging beer.

2016 Allagash Farm to Face

Beer pours a crystal clear golden hue with a thin cap of head that settled quickly. Small prickly little bubbles offer up a lovely carb bite to pair with the oak tannins and peach skins.

Beer is acidic but more so from the fruit than anything. Bone dry finish made me reach back quickly for more and more each time.

Fantastic beer.

Trying to drink down some beers since I went on a Boon splurge last year. Just so hard to beat that price.

This was a bit rough. Plenty of standard gueuze flavors but starting to get quite musty and cheesy. Kind of in a weird place right now. I think I really just prefer standard OG to MP though.

This was a pleasant surprise. Light funk and tons of overripe cherry flavor. It wasn't sour or acidic at all, totally smooth and delicious.

Did a 2008 - 2018 KBS vertical with imperialking and a few others on Friday evening, and my thoughts are below.

2011 > 2018 > 2012 > 2017 > 2009 > 2010 > 2016 > 2008 > 2015 > 2013 > 2014

2011 and 2012 were very strong, and the best of the recently cellared vintages. 2018 and 2017 were also very good, but showed little signs of oxidation / aging.

2013 / 2014 / 2015 were all various levels of terrible, and the beer just seemed very different from the earlier and later vintages.

2008 was surprisingly still full of coffee aroma and flavor without the green pepper oxidation that is so common, but wasn't all that full of life anymore. 2009 and 2010 were well balanced with a bit of coffee blended with barrel character and a touch of oxidation that wasn't all that bad honestly.

Probably the last large KBS vertical I'll be involved with as I don't have very much in the cellar myself anymore, but was fun to go out with a bang.

I haven't posted here in a while, but MarkIntihar sent me this a few weeks ago so here goes.

Avery Uncle Jacob's Stout - Feb 19 2016

Smells like bakers chocolate and booze. Taste is quite hot, that 17.1% is still making itself known. Bitter chocolate, light coconut, slight barrel presence, but it's like the big booziness just overwhelms it all. Nice full body.

I've had a couple of the big gravity beers from Avery before. And this one seems to go down the same road as those did, just too much alcohol. Tasty enough, but I'd prefer this to be more like 11-13%.

A few more cellar dwellers,

Trappistes Rochefort 10 - BB 270716. Multilayerd brown sugar, chocolate, leather and that unique floral/peppery Rochefort yeast. Thinning out a bit. I wouldn't go so far as to say this improved with time, but it certainly held up well. I don't see myself trying to age this one again.

SN Bigfoot 2012. I've got a few of these still in the cellar. A unique blend of oxidation, pungent hop bitterness, and toffee like malts w a stone fruit sweetness. The finish isn't as astringent as it's been on previous bottles, and I'm enjoying it more than I have in the past.

Anchor Old Foghorn - 2012. Blind pour. Belgian candi sugar, fig jam, vinous, grape laffy taffy, maybe a little herbal hops. Not much in the way of oxidation. Just a very sweet (but stops just short of being cloying) sipper. I wouldn't mind buying a sixer of this to pull a bottle from every couple of years or so.

2013-2015 vert. Purchased at the same location at the same time. Guess they found a stash of them? 2013 was still good but starting to go down hill. Slight oxidation and the saison element of it just not holding up to the lambic. 2014 was the best of the bunch, very drinkable with a light funk and citrus notes. Super gusher though. 2015 was a drain pour. Must have been a bad bottle, opened silently and poured almost still. Slightest carb and smells and tastes like the seal was compromised. Oxidized and notes of rotten apples. Sad they no longer make this beer, although I don't think it's the best candidate for aging.

weyerbacher blasphemy 2014

terrible, lots of apple and some tartness, drain pour, I used to drink these at 1 year old where I really enjoyed it but this one slipped by

Boooo. I had one of these (the old 22 oz. capped ones, not the newer corked & caged) at about six years a couple summers back & it was mind-bogglingly good. I have a couple of the 2015 put away based on this experience...I hope your bottle was an aberration!
