Got my sheets from the post office.

Saison- 40
Lambic- 32
Tripel- 28
Mild- 28
Sweet Stout- 25

The Tripel and Stout got comments and scores I expected and agree with (including two comments that i should have entered in Dry Stout instead) . My Mild got hit for light damage. The bottles absolutely weren't skunked when I sent em down. So I'm not happy about it.

I have to say I'm impressed with this competition. They posted results within a day of the competition, and I can't believe I got my score-sheets less than a week after the comp. I'm used to waiting at least two weeks, if not a month. I'm still waiting on one set from the summer of 2012. It was also nice to have 3 judges drink my beer. I had one national judge, who gave me a 37, so I'm satisfied. The other two judges gave fair comments as well. I think I'll send something again next year, if I have a batch ready.

I entered 2 beers last year and I feel this comp is a little more critical than the Dominion Cup which is the other big competition (300~400 entries) in VA. It's wierd because I medaled in that one this year as well but only Bronze but the score sheets seemed more forgiving/less negative. Not sure if that's a good thing or not. The CASK Beer Blitz is the best for getting the scores out though, HANDS DOWN!

Wait, wait, wait...I'm confused - WHAT? How would they decide the place in a points tie? Coin-toss? Wishbone break? A quick round of row-sham-bow? Haha!
Most of the categories were "queued" to speed up judging, and the result is a mini-BOS or playoff for each category. Each table sends their 2-3 best beers by score, but the mini-BOS is a beauty pageant where scores are irrelevant.

I kinda thought that's where you were going with that.

Piratewolf explained it well.

From the BJCP guidelines here:
http://www.bjcp.org/docs/MiniBOS.pdf
"The judges evaluate the entries anew without regard to (or knowledge of) any score assigned in the initial judging round. "

Thanks for the info. It makes me feel pretty good that I was just one taste-bud away from second. I'd really like to know what first got. It would be nice to know if it was JUST as close...or a total blowout.

Technically speaking it could have received a score lower than 35. Probably not, but it could have based on the rules.
