I've never used any of these hops, any idea how this recipe will work?


10 lbs 8.0 oz 2 row
1 lbs Crystal 10
1 lbs Crystal 60
1 lbs Melanoiden Malt
8.0 oz Carafoam
8.0 oz Munich II

1.0 pkg US-05

2.00 oz Apollo Mash 60.0 min
0.50 oz Comet Boil 40.0 min
1.00 oz Galaxy Boil 15.0 min
1.00 oz Galaxy flameout
2.00 oz Galaxy - Dry Hop 4.0 Days

mash 152 for 60 min
5 gallons
OG 1.068
IBU 57.7
SRM 11.7
ABV 7.1%
 
I just did an IPA with this hop schedule:

1oz Apollo (boil 60)
1oz Nelson Sauvin (boil 20)
1oz Apollo (boil 10)
1oz Comet (boil 2)
.5 oz Galaxy (flame out)
.5 Mosaic (flame out)
1oz Comet (dry hop 10 days)
1.5oz Galaxy (dry hop 10 days)
1.5oz Mosaic (dry hop 10 days)

Gotta say my best yet. Lots of Tropical fruit mixed with some dank from the Apollo.

Consider FWH with Apollo and moving the Comet to 5min or flameout. Maybe even a bit more Apollo at 10. You won't be disappointed!

I added the apollo to the mash to get flavor out of them as opposed to adding at the beginning of the boil or FWH.
I think I'll add the comet later, I just read that it should be used sparingly, that's why I added it as a bittering hop.

You're not going to get much, if any, flavor from adding hops in the mash. All the volatile oils are going to be vaporized in the boil.

Try doing a hop stand after the boil, 170F for 20 minutes. You'll get more aroma and flavor while not isomerizing the alpha acids.
 
Gotcha. Yeah I don't have much experience from mash hopping.

Comet can definitely be overpowering. I would use 1oz for every 1.5-2oz of other aroma/flavor hops.

From what I understand, mash hopping adds flavor/aroma because the mash temps aren't high enough to isomerize.

I've read that article and have been highly dubious of it. Hop aroma and flavor come from the volatile oils of the hops. When boiling, you vaporize them into the air. That's why you have a great smelling wort: what you're smelling is those oils boiling away into the atmosphere.

Of course, when you smell this in the boil, you think "Man, that boiling wort smells so good! This beer ifs going to have a ton of hoppy flavor and aroma!"
In reality, it's going up in vapor.

Good point, the only reason I could imagine it working is that it's given time to bind to the particles in the wort, but I've never done it before, I just planned on doing it so I could try a new brewing technique.
 
I hear you, I considered doing it once as well to get more flavor like you.
Also, the more I read about it though it seems that you need to add an insane amount of hops to do it. Someone said he added a pound(!) to make a really great pilsner vs. adding a few ounces in a hop stand.
 
Damn a pound sounds like a lot regardless of how you do it lol!
I've used hop bursting also with great success.
I wonder if the flavor you would get from a hop would be different between mash hopping, or hop bursting.
Sounds like an interesting experiment.
 
I haven't used those hops but I'd consider cutting the crystal malt by half (.5lb 10L and .5lb 60L) and bumping up the 2 row to compensate for gravity. I second the hop stand idea as well.
