The bung on my carboy keeps working
It's way out. Any ideas on how to make it stay? Worried about infections but it's pretty active at the moment so I don't think much air will make it in before I can find a solution

How much liquid is the end of that blowoff tube in? I've heard that the amount of liquid above the end of the tube can increase the pressure required to blow the gas out, so a lower liquid line might mean less pressure buildup in the fermenter, which might help with the stopper being pushed out.

Push it back in... But be careful. We do not want to read a thread "I pushed my bung into my carboy".

If it continues to work it's way out a bit of tape should hold it down.

I pushed it in as far as I can without pushing it down the next of the carboy and it works it's way out. I did take one other bung and sprayed it with some hairspray and letting it dry to be tacky we will see if that works

Thoroughly wash the bung of all hairspray, let it dry, dry the inside of the neck of the carboy, insert bung. the main problem is moister, get that out of the equation and you should be fine.

Dry the bung and the inside of the neck with a paper towel, as CBMbrewer stated, it is a moisture problem, get rid of the hairspray on the bung!

Do NOT use the stopper with hairspray!!!!!!

I would even suggest that you throw that one away.

Just let the neck of the carboy and the stopper get relatively dry, then it should hold.

Yeah I never installed that one I had an extra one laying around. I tried drying the bund in there now and the neck of the carboy we will see what happens. Thanks for the help

I'm a little nervous about not having that stuff well sanitized when I put the stopper in, so I use a couple strips of duct tape to make sure it stays put.

As others have stated it's most likely a moisture issue. If all else fails duck it.
Also don't sweat having the neck open for short periods of time, while not an ideal situation, the co2 pressure created by the yeast should keep most unwanted microbes out. Just make sure you store your carboy in a decently dust free room.

Get a bigger blow off tube, no bung required....whenit stops blowing off, insert stopper and airlock....have never had a problem this way - tube outer diameter matches carboy neck's inner diameter, fits snug, no pressure buildup due to sheer volume of stuff that can pass through at one time

This was happening to me last week. I wiped the bung and the top of the neck clean with vodka and gave it a few seconds to dry. Worked great. Hasn't moved since.

Agree totally with Life here. I have gone to splitting batches during primary so they have plenty of head space...no blow offs. I sanitize crazily so this angle works for me.
