this is my first lager(dortmunder from jamil),. i pitched cold(44) and brought up to 50. after 16 days in primary(waiting for empty keg) today i racked and got some carbonation in the beer. the airlock wasnt blocked and bubbled for about 5 days. there is no wild yeast flavor or acetic flavor to suggest infection. gravity is 1.018 at 58 degrees(expected is 1.013) but i think the slight carbonation is affecting my measurement. i didnt expect any carbonation and dont know what to make of it so i threw out the batch. seriously it tastes pretty good(still some sulfur) and i expect it to be ok. any help?

CO2 is more soluble in colder liquids, so when you're fermenting cold, more of it stays in solution. It comes out as the hydrometer sample warms. Voila - carbonation.

Congrats on tasty beer.

thanks. no i didnt throw out the batch. i was thinking after i posted it could be the lower temp and more dissolved co2. apprecite it

I've always had some CO2 after primary. Never thought to de-gas it before taking a hydro reading, though. Either way, normal.

I had this happen to me too on my current batch. De-gassing before a reading and get it room temperature as well. I went down 2 points by waiting 30 min.

For me the beer seems to be clearing itself with this carbonation. The color of the beer is getting lighter.

Well, I'm sure his batch is decarbonated, too, by now since the original post was almost three years ago! :D

True.

It's all about manging information. This came up in my search recently so I contributed based on my experience for the next user that searches the same thing. Its better I contribute to an older thread then start a new one IMO.
