Just curious, when you buy a jug of cider, do you buy an Imperial Gallon? I would LOVE to have some larger "1 G" glass jugs. I hope the answer is yes as I'd like to cross the border to pick up a few jugs when I'm up in eastern WA this summer.

Most juice sold in stores is in Liters... So, either 2L or 4L.

A litre is larger than a US quart, so 4L is larger than a US gallon. Thus a 4L bottle will give you enough room for a gallon of wort and a little headspace, if that's the direction you're headed.

Just remember: a litre is a quart plus foam.

This is where I live. We have a "Corn and Apple" festival late every August. They sell cider in 1/2 gallon and 1 gallon configurations. As you can see, this two are 1.89 litres. The large ones are 3.79 litres. I haven't really seen other ciders in glass jugs out here though. A lo of stuff I've seen in plastic jugs is either 3.79 litres or 4 litres, depending on where it is being packaged, I presume.

yeah, you might be able to find something in a 4 litre size. But some of our containers are just american sized containers with the contents listed in ml, or litres.

I blame you guys south of the border for silly things like 1.89 litre bottles of juice. :cross:

Yah, thanks for correcting me.. I had the numbers backwards. I think a 4 liter might be very useful... 5 liter even mo betta :)

I haven't specifically looked for imperial gallon glass jugs, but I find it unlikely you would find them. Cider sold in glass jugs is going to be a specialty product, and it's possible/likely that Whole Foods/etc. source from the US. If they don't source from the US, they will likely be metric, usually/always 4 liters.

I have a "methuselah" (6 liter wine bottle). Works great for fermenting starters and small test batches. :)

If you are looking for 1 Gallon glass jugs I've two places to look at. I know my local shawarma restaurants sometimes get their vinegar in 1US gallon jugs. I've grabbed them out of the recycling after giving them a look over, bet they'd give em to you if you asked nice enough. I've brewed in them before and they work great(except the labels are stuck on and have no intrest in moving). Depending on the time of year Canadian Tire also sells 1 gallon jugs(I think US gallons but don't quote me on that) and they are pretty reasonably priced, tend to wind up in the 'maple syrup' section of the store.

Thanks, I have plenty of 1g jugs.. just looking for something a bit larger. I contacted Lakeland above.. they say they have no US sites

I actually pulled it out of a recycling bin years before I started brewing, and have thought, several times, that it should go back there. lol Then I discovered brewing! :D They cost almost $50 to buy new and empty! ;)
