Ok, I understand that you need a starter for a lager since it ferments at a low temperature and it would take a while to build up the cell count, but why would you need it for an ale?

Look a few threads down Ohms. Oh and I believe lagers age at lower temps and neither have or have not a need for starters because of this, but someone who lagers could probably commend on that.

A fast start on your fermentation is generally a good thing, less chance of contamination. If you haven't been to the Oak Barrel (for supplies) in Bezerkly, give it a try and say Hi! to Homer.
