Can you burn a wort?

Cooked up a hefe for the 1st time. Directions said to boil for an hour. Ended up chocolate brown. Did I burn it?

If it's malt extract (DME/LME) and you added it when the heat was on, it's possible you scorched it.

This can happen. I brewed an American Wheat and, without thinking, poured the LME into the boil kettle while it was on the heat. I ended up with a darker beer that thankfully still tastes good, but there were black scorch marks on the bottom of the pot.

Lesson learned, don't add malt while the pot is on the heat.

Thank you both. That's exactly what I did. I now have a hefe/bock, hefe/stout, a dark hefe. Lol

The next time, just turn the heat off completely until your LME/DME is completely dissolved into the water. Then turn the heat back on.
