I want to take a hydro sample but don't have a super long turkey baster and don't want to turn the fermenter on it's side (spilling, contact with the krausen on the side) to use the short one I have.

Can I use my auto siphon? Just basically draw fluid into it but not push down and start the siphon?

Anyone done this?

Yup that's what I do.

why not buy a turkey baster at a dollar store or something? it's much easier to sanitize than an entire auto siphon

BE CAREFUL! Using your auto siphon in the described fashion could start a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the universe itself!

Of course that's a worse case scenario...
