can anyone tell me what is on top of my beer? it doesn't look like most beer pellicle pictures online. air had to have got in or something wasn't sanitized???????? or did i do something during the brew?
if anyone can help explain what it is or what i did wrong i would greatly appreciate it!
Also is it drinkable underneath whatever is on top?

Krausen. That's normal. Swap your air lock for a clean one or pull that one and clean and replace. Looks like you overfilled that Jug. You need room for the yeast to work.
 
That's the problem with 1 gallon jugs as fermenters, if you leave enough head space, there's practically no beer. Many homebrewers use 6.5 gallon carboys or buckets for a 5 gallon brew, so about 30% headspace.
 
for 1 gallon batches I usually use the 2 gal plastic bucket that came with my fruit winemaking kit.
if you ask your local bakery, they usually have 2-3 gallon food grade plastic pails that their icing comes in. they make awesome primary vessels for small batches.
 
all the advice is greatly appreciated! I now have a blow off connected, and ill have to find something else for a 1 gallon batch next time. learning and enjoying the process.
