Don't think you are the lone ranger! My three entries never got out of the first round.
Sorry to hear that. You brew great stuff especially your funk!Got my sheets. Pretty crushed honestly.
It's generally accepted that NHC is not a competition to enter if you're looking for feedback.Judging is subjective.
Remember your beer was likely in a flight of 10+ beers of the exact same style. Subtle difference between beers shine through in most cases. Think of going to the store and looking at big screen tv's. Side by side, your eyes see differences and one seems to be much better then the next, but take any of them home and it's a great TV.
If you've never judged or stewarded at a competition I would highly recommend volunteering. It's a great experience and you'll understand the process of judging much better.
Hopefully the judges gave good feedback on how they would improve your beer for what they saw as the issue. Being a premiere national competition (plus $30 an entry + shipping + 6 bottles) you should get the best feedback of all competition.
Congrats man! That’s pretty cool about Stan Hieronymous too. I heard he judged the Double IPA category. Both my entries made it to the 3rd round but I didn't win anything. Stan Hieronymous judged one of my beers, so that is pretty cool at least!
Congrats on making it to the 4th round on one of your beers! Still not exactly clear on how the rounds even work, hahaCongrats man! That’s pretty cool about Stan Hieronymous too. I heard he judged the Double IPA category.
This is how it went for me;
NEIPA - 4/4
CZ Dark Lager - 2/3
NZ Pilsner - 1/3
My NZ Pilsner was my personal favorite but it got crushed for acetaldihyde by both judges. I cracked a bottle yesterday after getting the results and I don’t taste it at all. Acetaldihyde is definitely an easy flavor to detect so all I can think is my bottles got hot in shipping and maybe some hop creep produced it
Though it is a bit sad that this is the case. In theory these are the most experienced and respected judges in the program. I would be willing to pay the premium entry fee if it meant getting more accurate feedback than can be expected from a regional $8 entry fee competition, but it seems to be the opposite. At least a score would be nice...vs the vague "2/3 rounds" metric. It's generally accepted that NHC is not a competition to enter if you're looking for feedback.
I chatted with one judge at Homebrew Con. She said there was a lot of pressure just to eliminate beers from each round and not enough time to give quality feedback. I have heard rumblings that this feeling is not isolated to this one judge.

I’m pretty sure @BrewnWKopperKat was just letting you know that other people feel the same as youIt was obvious the judges were pressured, in order to go through the beers as quickly as possible.
The scribbling on my feedback sheets was barely legible.
Yes, they were rushed.
Yet another thing that stewards, in the late 2010s, were aware of.It was obvious the judges were pressured, in order to go through the beers as quickly as possible.

And suggesting that those interested 'take it to the next level and never look back'. Put together a proposal for that makes the competition more valuable to those interested in the changes.I’m pretty sure @BrewnWKopperKat was just letting you know that other people feel the same as you
I ended up with a silver for an American Lager, the International Lager went 3/3, my Czech Pils went 2/3 and my German Pils bombed 1/3.
NHC is a different animal and I'm not looking for feedback. I enter for the fun of it and the challenge that comes with it. This competition brings out the best brewers, so normally those beers would have cleaned up at a smaller comp, but at NHC, I was lucky to get one.
One comment on feed back; If you have 5 different judges that rated your one beer, without talking to each other about it, you would get the impression that they had 5 different beers. Most times the feed back is a tad confusing and often just worthless. You have to know the styles and the brewing process yourself without relying on someone to show you the way. You should be able to know the flaws prior to sending it in and see if the judges notice.

Likely little difference. Its pretty clear in a flight of beers which beers stand out. I imagine there was some deliberation in the later rounds like in a true BOS. Just because they didnt write it down doesnt mean they thought less about it.We can’t help but wonder how different the results would have been if the judges were not so rushed, to quickly eliminate beers? And proceed to the next round?
This certainly casts a shadow on the entire event.

I've never been a fan of calibration beers. The only person in the room I need to calibrate with is the other judge sitting across from me. That's pretty much happens on the first beer. This is where a calibration beer round w all judges discussing can be so helpful to get them “ on the same page” Happens at local competitions...sometimes.
And congrats on the medal!!
