Greetings all!

When putting together a recipe, I can calculate the bittering hops for any volume. AA%, volume of beer, required IBU. Simple enough.

But what about aroma/flavor hops? How do you know how much is required without just guessing?

The reason I am asking is because I am going to be brewing a 1bbl batch of beer. For 5 gallons there are some general numbers, a bit of guessing. But on a larger volume, I would want to be doing a bit better than guessing. Also, I want my recipes to be more precise/scientific.

Is there a way of knowing how strong an aroma or flavor you would get? Certain oil concentration versus OG or FG, for example?

Thanks folks for any insight!

Not that I'm aware of! Just like with cooking recipes, the hops are the "seasoning" and I think the correct amount comes with experience (also known as 'trial and error' :D)

I do think we can make some assumptions, based on the same recipe in a 5 gallon size and extrapolate from there. Many pro brewers using a large system do a trial batch on a 5 gallon system to get the balance right, and then brew on the larger system. I'd rather throw away 5 gallons than 5 barrels!
