It's time for a new mattress. I haven't bought one in years, the existing unit was chosen by the ex-gf.

I gotta believe most of the sites that review mattresses are completely full of shvt. They're obviously getting paid when there is a link to buy the mattress on the site.

And gosh, ain't it strange how you can't compare models between stores? I guess each retailer gets to decide what they call their mattresses. Surely Serta, Sealy, and others don't make a different product for each vendor?

What a racket!

There was an article a while back about mattress ad scams, paying bloggers for reviews, all kinds of stuff.

No idea how you tell which reviews are legit. There’s always the mattress store for some in person testing. Guess thats the only thing you can trust. Although a few of the online sellers have free trials, might be worth investigating.

I took a quick look on Consumer Reports online (we're shopping for a mattress, too). Their best buy is a brand I had never heard of--Avocado Green. The MSPR is around $1400, and it rates 85 points, several points higher than the Sealy Posturepedic, etc. It's an innerspring type with foam top.

Trips to a few local mattress stores have been less than enjoyable, with creepy salespeople pouncing on us the minute we walk in, and steering us to the $3000-plus models.

I've spent the last few hours of this beautiful afternoon sitting on my couch, googling mattress stuff and watching baseball. (Cards lost, booo) Here are some tidbits from digital realm:

-The mark up on mattresses is huge.

-List price vs selling price means nothing; the only things that matter are the type and weight of a mattress. Higher quality mattresses weigh more.

-The number of coils doesn't mean much, but there should be at least 600. Wire thickness and coil type also factor in.

-Most of the online sellers are just marketing companies and actually don't make mattresses.

-The mark up on mattresses is huge.

-Leggett and Platt make the coils for just about everyone.

-If you're looking for a firm mattress, plush-pillow-gel-comfort top models should be avoided. You can add a pad later and it will be cheaper.

-Anything over $1,500 (mattress only) is a waste of money.

-The mark up on mattresses is huge.

-YMMV

Avocado is on my list. Supposedly, they are eco-friendly, which generally means you're paying a 10-20% premium for the privilege.

I'm checking out a few retailers this week. I want to see what happens when I ask for a 80-90lb innerspring tight-top...

They technically are a separate model number. Clever ploy by matress sellers to avoid price-match comparisons. I don't know exactly, but you can call their bs if know the spring/coil count or something.

I used to be a contractor at Sealy and would get mattresses at cost.

The top of the line $5000 Stearns and Foster bed cost me about $700 to my door with a new frame.

Also got various full queen sets (frame, foundation and matt ) for $250. At one point I had more high end cheap mattresses than rooms.

Also be aware that the new Tempur style beds are much more difficult to fsck on. They absorb so much energy it makes getting a rhythm going much harder. Inner springs get a resonance going pretty easily.

Serta iSeries 500 from Mattress Firm. It's soft to lay on and supports with firmness. Not a lot of motion transfer. Good temperature. We've only had it a few months. So far, so good. Most comfortable mattress we've had.

Go buy a Sleep Number bed. Actually, go buy the base model and then buy a $200 mattress pad.

Other than having to remember to increase the pressure before adult time, they are amazing, doubly so if you and your significant other have different sleeping preferences.

surely everyone gets their mattress recommended by their favorite podcast nowadays?
I went down the mattress rabbithole recently as I'm a bit dubious of flame retardent chemicals in my face for a third of my life, and holy Christ the amount of rubbish new age bollocks that has been popping up on Google since then makes me want to drink glyphosate..
that said after getting a super expensive lamb wool spring one that was was too soft and returning it for the firm version it's actually worth it.

2 things:
1. NEVER buy a 2-person mattress, it won't work, it isn't cute or romantic, it's just painful for one of you.
2. NEVER buy a 2-person duvet, one will be too hot or too cold, and fighting for blanket isn't romantic either.

Too bad the US doesn't have jysk and you're too far away from canada to get it there, they do good mattress for very good prices.

edit. nevermind, the canadian stuff is totally different from our side of the pond

I've never understood the marketing ploy regarding mattress weight after 8 years, etc...

We put sheets on our mattress or else we don't sleep on that mattress. Are you telling me that my dead skin cells somehow magically diffuse through 2 layers of 10,000 thread count Egyptian cotton thus causing what used to weigh in a 200lbs to weigh 900lbs eight years later?

I don't doubt there is some difference. I just don't buy into the extremes they market against lest these product are being used bare for 8 year.

Late to the party, but we love our Casper bed.

My wife and I prefer different types of beds, but this type of mattress is really great for both of us. Ours is Tuft and Needle though. There are expensive mattresses in this genre but I think that ours cost around 500 bucks for a king, is delivered by UPS or FedEx or whomever, and is the most comfortable mattress I’ve had. We’ve had it for a year or so without issues. I can’t imagine that it will ever start squeaking when I mattress dance since there’s no springs.

I was researching mattresses about a year ago and had settled on the AmeriSleep Liberty. I still haven't picked one up though. It looks like they changed it's name to AS2 and raised the cost $150. Grrrrrr!!!!

You got to go and try them out first and go as big as you can. The wife and I just got a new mattress because the one we had the sides blew out. It got replaced under warranty and we paid the difference to go King size from queen. It is nice to spread out and have to touch anyone.

After MUCH deliberation & investigation we decided on a DreamCloud. They delivered and hauled away the old mattress!
Great quality!
