Drill a small hole in the lid for an airlock, then wrap some Teflon tape around the airlock and shove it in there. Bam...instant fermenter.

You need to get the small black grommets which keeps the airlock nice and tight. They are the same ones you get in the ale pail. My LHBS sells these for $.50. Drill a 7/16" hole in the plastic lid and add a grommet. Problem solved.

Now get brewing!

You could also use a drilled rubber/latex cork. They are a little bigger and will need a larger hole drilled in the top but you won't have the grommets falling in the beer either.

Thanks you just helped me figure out how to seal my blowoff setup--1 inch vinyl tubing didn't seal tightly enough inside the carboy and I had some bubbling around the edges during a particularly vigorous fermentation. Saran wrap worked in a pinch but this'll work much better.

thanks for the advice. i figured to brew somthing to put in it, but i dont want to brew somthing and THEN figure out how to set everything up. its always a good idea to have everything ready before you start. i found the hydrometer at the science store, clear plastic tubing and clamps at the hardware store, stick on thermometer at the pet shop, just need to get the air lock. im thinking hole in top of lid, tubing from lid to small mason jar filled with water.
