My brother and his family recently moved from California to New York. I just flew my wife and kids out (from CA) for our first visit... and my brother's first brew! Over the last few months, I helped my brother (SchottyBeer on HBT) gather the basic equipment needed for a 5 gallon batch sparge setup. Here are some pics of his first voyage making a beer I designed: DeVirginizer Red IPA.
Heating up strike water. We started outside...
...then moved under cover because it started snowing, a novel experience for this Cali brewer
Doughing in! He bought his ingredients from a local brewery/LHBS called The North Brewery.
A little sip while mashing- Sam Adams 2011 Utopias. Wow.
Hop additions all setup- mostly Amarillo with some Fuggles, Chinook, and Magnum.
Doing it.
His new JaDeD Brewing IC and 48F water chilled 5.5 gal of wort to 58F in 14 minutes. Even with a double crush, we only hit 63% efficiency giving us a 1.054 OG wort... which is just fine. Pitched a sachet of S-04 and put the fermenter in a place that'll keep to 64F.
Cheers!
