So we tried to move our 4 year old hop plant the other day, and the roots broke into multiple pieces while we were digging them up. If we replant all of the rhizomes in the new area, will we just end up with several plants or are they too far gone? The biggest roots are about 2" in diameter if that helps.

You cannot kill hops. I'm going to predict you'd get 4 plants out of that. Plant however many you actually want and see what happens.

You'll probably also get hops in the location you're moving them from - they propogate quickly.

i doubt you killed anything. I removed some potted hops from my parents house that the roots had grown through the bottom of the pot. I had to cut them and leave them in the ground to move them to my new place. My plants ended up being fine and I bet they'll have binds coming out of the ground this spring!

I’ll echo what the others said. It will be totally fine.

I transplanted my 4 year old cascade plant two winters ago. Last season was a step backwards in terms of productivity. The plant was very robust in initially, but it became clear by mid summer that the plant was struggling to sustain hop production due to lack of an established root system.

Keep your expectations in check for this season’s hop production. Next year should be back to normal.
