I'm wanting to try something different this weekend with a brew kit. Thinking of using brown sugar. Any advise or alternatives I could use to dextrose?

What's the recipe?

Brown sugar = white sugar + molasses. If your recipe calls for dextrose, you are just adding molasses. How will that fit in your recipe?

If its a kit with dextrose in the boil use dry malt extract instead

Adding some brown sugar won't hurt anything for virtually any style as long as it isn't too large a percentage of the fermentables. What exactly are you planning on doing?

I dont think brown sugar did much for flavor but make it taste weird,Ill maybe try molassis to get that flavor effect 'Brown sugar will lighten the body and dry it some this really is the effect you will get if thats what you want. As a new brewer it sounds good but it is almost completly fermentable and leaves only a miniscule of flavor.

I would go for either turbinado sugar or dememera sugar... You could find either/both in your grocery store. They are unrefined sugar so they have more character to them. Dememera alse "adds slight sweetness and smooth character."

I would try to keep it to under 10% of the malt/grain bill...

I've started priming with these sugars. I haven't actually tried one of the brews primed with it yet, since it's still carbonating. I plan to use it for another brew on deck for bottling in the next few days (was supposed to be last Sunday, but I still haven't gotten to it)... It's cheap enough sugar, plus hasn't been processed all that much. Both are pluses in my book. :D

I brewed a brown ale with a cup of brown sugar recently. Not bad thinned the beer out a bit and had a bit of butterscotch taste. I think i should have used it at 5min not at the beginning of the boil. Bumped my sg from 1.046 to 1.051 and my fg was 1.010. I wont do it again.
