Brewing in Montreal

Just thought I would say hello. I've never made beer before on my own, but I grew up in a home brewing family and all the gear looks familiar, even if I don't always know what to do with it. I'm just fermenting my first batch now (Cooper's IPA from a kit.) I got off to a bad start by adding waaaay too much water, but luckily, I have lots of experienced brewers in the family who are givoing me good advice and helping me recover from/learn from my mistakes. Hopefully it will just be a short matter of time before I am making my own beer as good as that of my friends and family.

If you look down south a little bit, you might see me!!! I'm from Longueuil. I just started brewing 2 months ago. My first batch was a success. Hope your first turns out good too!

If you want a good home brew shop, go to "La cachette du bootlegger" in Baie-D'urfé. http://www.cachettedubootlegger.ca/

They have their very own super fresh concentrates. They call 'em super batch. The first I made was an Honey Lager and I'm almost finish with my Belgian Ale.

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

I'm just up the road rom Baie-D'urfe in Pointe Claire so I will be sure to check out the superbatch next time round! Thanks for the heads up. Had a bottle emptying BBQ yesterday, invited all our friends over with the condition that they brought their own import beers (no twist offs allowed!) and left the bottles behind Hopefully this will be the last commercial beer I drink for awhile.

Hi beer lovers.

I just googled "home brew montreal" and found this thread. This site looks awesome! It seems right up my alley so I've signed up.

I've just moved from Melbourne Australia to Montreal, so I'm very familiar with the Coopers kits mentioned above (they're OK but there's better in my opinion). I'm in Chambly at the moment but I'm moving to Greenfield Park soon. Is there a brew shop closer to me than the one listed above that someone can recommend?

I've been kit brewing on and off for about 20 years but I want to do a full mash, so I'm looking for a well equipped shop. Any other local knowledge about full mash will be much appreciated. I was filling kegs back home and I'd like to do that again here.

Welcome to HBT - and to Canada Jaf! I'm not familiar with Montreal so I can't help you with brew shops, I seem to recall seeing Montreal come up a few times in the introductions forum, if you start a thread you may find some other locals.

I checked out this store the other day. Great place... the salesman was very friendly and helpful (cute too!) and gave me some good tips. I picked up a kit for the Bootleggers Extra Special Bitter, it's bubbling away in the primary as I type

It's sad that this place is far from where I live. I had to go with my LHBS for my 2 last batches (wheat and cream ale). Hope they turn out good anyway.

welcome from south of the border. I am about 2 hours from Montreal, in St. Johnsbury Vermont. I used to love visiting Montreal until trying to come back into my own country became such a hassle.

This place: http://www.grainsmaltes.com/ is quite good in terms of price and selection. I used my poor french to order by email - and everything was good.
I believe thats its less than an hour from Montreal - and I think that its a home/mail operation - but they can accomodate pick-ups if you give them notice.
I am not sure if they speak english - so you may need a someone who speaks french.

Hello Meche, I'm just west of you in Beaconsfield, - seems like ther a few of us here & that shud help as we go forward. I'm just getting back into wine & beer. We just did 4 wines( from kits). I'll now start a few beers. I have been to the 'Bootlegger' & I like his beer offerings so I may start with his bitter & maybe a pilsenser type. Keep me in mind if you come up with any good finds locally.
