Hello! I currently live in Egypt and some friends and I were discussing the possibility of brewing here. I have brewed roughly 10 batches of extract beer in the US and was looking to get into all-grain, but moved here instead.

So, does anybody have any experience in brewing in less than ideal conditions? There are certainly no homebrew equipment stores here, but I think we should be able to cobble things together. Is this feasible?

I'm operating under the assumption that we can get hops and yeast from abroad, but will need to acquire everything else here. I'm thinking malt extract is unfeasible, so we'll probably start off with a 1 gallon batch of all-grain. Here's a list of equipment that I think we need and how we might acquire it. List is by no means comprehensive. This is an exploratory post and basically I'm looking for advice and encouragement :).

Mash tun: I can probably just use a nice big ol' pot for this, yes?

Lauter tun: Any advice on how to construct this would be much appreciated :).

Boiling kettle: No problems here.

Fermenter: I'm pretty sure we can acquire a nice food grade bucket, no problem.

Air lock: setting up a blow-out tube should also be pretty easy.

Racking Cane: Should be able to find some sort of rigid plastic tubing here. Egyptians like tubes.

Bottling: Not sure exactly how to handle this. Can we just siphon into bottles carefully? Constructing a bottling bucket with a spigot seems like a lot of work.

What else, what else?

Thanks!

You could try brew in a bag. I'm doing partial mash this way atm. Less equipment needed. I use a cake cooling rack in the bottom of my BK to keep the grains/bag from burning on the bottom. And get a bottlingwand & some 3/8" tubbing to rig it to the spigot on a bottling bucket.
That way,you won't aerate the fermented beer going into the bottles.

Bag brewing is a fantastic idea, hadn't occurred to me. My problem with bottling is acquiring a bottling bucket with a spigot. I suppose I could commission something relatively cheap and have a wand shipped from the US, but other ideas would be nice too.

The mash tun and lauter tun can be combined into one vessel. Most of us use a converted cooler.

For bottling, you can just drill a hole in a food grade bucket and get the spigot from the US. Or, like you said, you can just siphon carefully from the fermenter and use carb tabs instead of priming sugar.
