I've brewed a couple of batches now and both of them taste a little off one of them was just plain harsh. I just tried a third batch and ended up discarding it because some of the extract scorched on the bottom of my pot.

I'm wonderring if my pot is my problem. How big a deal is a really good pot? If it's a big deal....any suggestions?
 
most likely not your pot - unless it's so good that it's altering your taste:cross:

for real tho, I use an aluminum pot that is nasty, I mean it's always sanitized, but aluminum oxidizes and burns easily. Anyway, the expensive pots are built to last forever and be heated over flames many, many times that's why they're a big deal. Plus, they're big.

I can't imagine how a pot could alter your flavor. Must be something else. What you got???
 
The off flavors could have been a number of things, and may have faded with age if given a chance. I wouldn't have even thrown away the scorched batch, it may have turned out fine.

As for pots, they can make a world of difference. A thin bottomed pot is going to be more likely to cause scorching, but even this could be minimized by removing the pot from the heat while stirring in extract.

A decent 6 gallon stainless steel stockpot can be found at places like Costco and Sam's Club for about 60 bucks. Larger ones can be found at a number of internet retailers. If you want to go big, and have the resources to boil it, you could spend over 200 for a brew-pot with a valve in the bottom.
