I have done similar with great results. Try just covering it tightly with heavy duty aluminum foil, and if you want reinforce the "seal" with a string or throw a towel over the top. You don't need a seal though, a loose covering is just fine for primary fermentation. You shouldn't try to ferment more than 4 gallons, maybe 4.5 with Fermcap S drops.
 
I have my grandparents old crocks from Germany, they brewed in the US all thru Prohibition with a hot wax dipped cloth over their fermentors. Then off to the porcelain capped bottles.
