My opinion...

remaining 3 pay him $300 at about $100/month so remaining 3 are not put out financially.

Make a pact with remaining 2 while they are still upset that every one is all in, no one will get money back unless unit is sold off.

You then have $1550 invested in a nice rig with no worries of future problems.

You keep your friend, remaining group knows whats up going forward and can brew or not if they want too.

Yeah so it's really lame when someone asks a question, gets a lot of thoughtful responses, and then disappears.

Especially when he never provided enough information to allow people to give good definitive answers.

Bottom line, if the equipment is worth enough to you and your friends to pay him $1000, then pay him. If even one person doesn't feel like continued use of the equipment is worth paying more for then sell it, pay everyone out, and start over.

I like this sugestion but would take it one step further (or is that too far :D).
Say for arguments sake that the rig is now worth $4000 / $1000 each.
One person wants out -> That person should tak a bit of a hit since it is a personal, not a group, decision that is inconviencing the others. 10% sounds fair. So the other 3 buy him out for $900 / $300 each.
If one other does not want to pay an extra $300 for his share of the going 1/4 of rig then he should be paid out at the value of his share ($100) by the other two. so that would be $1900 split two ways, so $950 extra for 1/2 share. If another doesn't want to pay that then the last should have the option of buying everyone out for $3000 ($900 to the first and $1050 to the other 2)
If the last cannot/does not want to buy the whole thing sell it and split the money $900/$1033/$1033/$1033 (Or whatever the selling price split actually is)
Seems fair to me :)

Pay out half now, other half in a few months. In the meantime he gets free brews from the rest of you guys. $1000 isn't that bad split between 3 people.

This or half now and beer and more beer and just a little more beer and who cares about the rest! Plus, with the beer...you may still remain friends.
