We bought 12 foot long kayaks last weekend. Kind of a compromise between a sea kayak and a river kayak- we wanted something for smaller lakes and maybe the bigger rivers. What a blast it is! They kayaks are smaller than our canoes so they are lighter and we just throw them in the truck. They do hang over the back a little bit, but they'll fit nicely on the top of the camper on the boat racks.

Now Bob wants a few more items for his kayak- it's kind of hard to fish and paddle at the same time, so he is going to get some mounts for the fishing rod, etc. If we ever get rain, we'll try them in one of the rivers around here.

Does anybody else love to paddle?

(Er- kayaks and canoes specifically)

Love canoeing! There are a few great spots here in Texas. Spent 10 days in Canada's Quetico Superior a few years back. THAT was a blast! Haven't done much kayaking though (lack of resources) but would love to sometime in the future.

I also have two 12' boats. Wilderness Systems - Pungo & Perception - Acadia. They rock for smallish rapids (actually had ours in class III once) and playing on lakes. We have even camped out of them. I will never own another canoe.

Edit- A pic:

I love kayaking. I haven't gone in a couple of years, but I do enjoy it. I've got a small river near my house that I'm pretty sure wound be nice for kayaking, but I haven't given it a shot yet.

I used to screw around in my roommates kayak, but he was all hardcore and did the big rapids like the Narrows on the Green River in NC and such. I could never get the flip yourself back over thing down good enough to comfortable do any runs.

canoes are WAY more my style ;)

Congrats Yooper!

Great pic, fife!

We have a canoe but I'd like to get two kayaks for us. They just temporarily closed the park and lake by my house due to a furlough, looks like it'll be a little while before we can go back there again.

Seafresh...look into rec boat (about 12') kayaks like Yooper and I are talking about. They are much different to the short whitewater boats you played with and are very stable.

I have a couple of 10 footers (wilderness pongos). They are definitely fun.

We just toss them in the back of the truck and go paddle around a pond, or do a small river run (like everything else, rivers are small in RI). Spend a couple hours on the river, paddling along. It is thoroughly relaxing. Especially with a brew in the cup holder (you did get a cupholder in your's right?).

best (non brewing) investment ever. loads of fun at almost no recurring cost.

Actually, I wish I was on the river right now....

And to bring this around full circle...

What do BMC and having sex in a canoe have in common? :D

I'll be here all week...

how heavy are those 12ft boats (are they able to portage is what i am getting at)

They are not heavy- mine weighs 48 pounds. Not too bad to portage if you have two people and two kayaks- I would hold the handles in the front and Bob in the bag and stand between them and carry them that way. I see some people with wheeled contraptions, but you can't use wheels in the Wilderness areas here. My husband would just carry his own upside down over his head, but I'm not "man enough" for that. My 15 foot canoe weighs about 75 pounds, to compare.

It's a pretty dumb joke, but I'm not giving it away just yet.

Anybody else never heard it before?

I love to canoe! I used to build them when I was younger. Had to give it up when I started living in an apartment.
I remember building a fiberglass canoe back in the 70's with my Dad. That sh!t stunk and I nearly bled to death from scratching that burning fiberglass itch.

We grew up in upsate NY and the lakes an stream were awesome.

We sure had a great time with that canoe.

I built cedar-strip canoes but ya, they were fibre-glass coated. I understand now that there is a marine epoxy that is 100x better and easier to work with. I'm hoping to buy my first house next year and plan to make canoes again. Can't wait to get back into it!

When I saw the thread title and poster I thought it was going to be in the [Mod Edit]. Thread does not deliver!

Actually I did it myself. I figured Yooper'd just do it anyways, may as well try to stay somewhat on her good side. I wouldn't want a paddling or anything.

oh wai
