bottling. highest gravity reading?

What is the highest gravity reading you can successfully bottle at? don't need any explosions. also, is one cup of priming sugar for a 5 gallon batch pretty much standard?

Totally depends on what gravity you started at.

Priming sugar should be measured by weight, not volume, but 1 cup will give you quite a bit of carbonation. Different styles should have diff volumes. Search for a carbonation calculator or use the one in the link in my signature.

By "successfully bottle" you mean no bottle bombs? Well then, the only gravity that you can successfully bottle at is the gravity when your beer is done. There is no standard for this and every batch of beer is and will be different. Once your beer is done fermenting, that is gravity you can bottle at, whatever it may be.

How long has it been in the fermenter for? Did you hit your O.G. and F.G.?
