This may be a stupid question but since I'm a newb I'll ask it anyway. Is there any reason why I couldn't bottle by simply attaching a short tube to my spigot and using that to bottle? Why do I need a siphon or wand?
 
The wand prevents splashing and offers a much neater way to stop the flow of beer. Well worth the dollar or so they cost.
 
^ agreed. Additionally I've found that the amount of liquid the wand displaces is about the perfect amount of head space for carbonation. Just fill to the brim, remove the wand, and you're at the right level.

I've done both, I like my bottling wand. The spigot is okay, tilt your bottle to decrease splashing and oxidation. But as the bucket gets low, turning or pressing the spigot tends to move the bucket. Or maybe I'm just clumsy. With the wand it's very easy.
