Hello most awesome forum,

I am going to bottle my sixth batch today. Up to this point, I have used 1Step and/or the dishwasher to sanitize my bottles. I ran out of 1Step last time; based on everyone's recommendations now have StarSan. Since I am using a combination of PET and bombers, I am not going to use the dishwasher; instead, have the bottling bucket full w/1 oz of StarSan and am beginning to cycle the bottles through it.

When I empty the bottles of the StarSan, there seems to be a lot of bubbles and foam. I never had this with 1Step; I know StarSan is supposed to be no-rinse, but I worry about the foam/residue affecting the flavor or carbonation or ? ?

Problem or no problem?

Many thanks!
John

You'll be fine. First if you are filling properly, from the bottom, most of the excess foam will be pushed out first. In fact I usually fill til the foam is pushed out of the bottle and a few dribbles of beer come out, then I stop, back out the bottle wand, and end up with perfect headspace.

Next any excess starsan will become food for the yeasties.

Thanks for the quick response! This is my first Hefe - closer to a Weizenbock - and the samples taken for the gravity readings are most excellent. I just don't want anything affecting the flavor.

I just used Starsan for the first time today as well. I was always using iodophor before.
But I took the advice from guys like Revvy and others, I tell you what, I had foam all over the place. I did not fear it one bit. I'm a fan.

I think it's the shore of an ocean, lol. I just typed in "massive foam" on google, picked a good one, and made it into a poster.... ahhhh, gotta love boredom at work! :D

Still a noob here but I like the search feature! Just bottled my first batch and was really wondering how I was going to explain the Starsan taste to everyone!

Glad to hear it's a non-issue. :mug:

If you buy yourself a "Vinator" you'll use less Starsan. The foam is fine, it actually breaks down into something the yeast can eat. (There's no "starsan" taste, near as I can tell.)

Bottled my first batch a week ago. As a previous poster stated, the bubbles were pushed to the top and out the bottle. I tried one of the beers today just to make sure all was well and it's fantastic already.
