Bottle Crates

Guaging some interest as well as what people would pay.

Since the cardboard boxes that cases come in eventually wear out. I was looking at making some hardwood crates. Probably out of maple or oak. They would be devided so the bottles don't bang together and would have dovetailed joints. Would also be placing handles in them. Who would pay for them and how much?

I vote $10 only because I am a woodworker and would likely make my own. Take a search for some Westvleteren crates, they look really classy. Looks like a good product to emulate, too.

I would like to see the crates have tops. Maybe something that would slide into slots from the side and not hinged. I would also like to see crates that were sturdy, but also not too heavy. Solid wood and not plywood, particle board or Masonite would be nice, but I don't think they would need to be hardwood. I would not want to pay more than about $15 each, which probably would not leave much room for a decent profit.

I voted for $20 because I think it would give you a reasonable return for your labour. At $10 you would have to be mass producing these things to see any profit. I doubt you would have the volume (at least initially) to make that work.

That said, I'm not personally in the market as I've gone with double wide milk crates for mine FWIW. Great idea about the dividers too!

Right on the money sir! I like the plastic crates myself. Cleaning up bottle bombs is no problem, just hose 'er off.

The square plastic milk crates are free and hold 16 x 22 oz bombers perfectly. Yeah I know about the ethics and what not but screw that. Isn't it normal for homebrewers to be cheapasses?

can't say I'd buy anything for this purpose. When my cardboard ones wear out, I just go to the liquor store and ask for a few empty beer cases. They are glad to get rid of them.
