I've been brewing for a couple of months now, with some success. Mainly been using kits from my LHBS or recipes from the internet. I would like to start designing my own recipes and have been researching different books.

Primarily looking at "Brewing Classic Styles" and "Designing Great Beers". Still trying to get a handle on characteristics of different grain, hops and yeast and what would work well together.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Designing Great Beers is my personal brew bible. It's a fantastic resource and I use it often. I owe much of my brewing success to that book alone. In it he discusses many things you are interested in.

The data he has collected are from second round national homebrew comp entries. They passed the test, and he offers the information to you in a way that gives you a method to predict the outcome of the beer.
