Bob used to love malty beers, but he's becoming more and more of a hophead.

Lately I've noticed that whatever the newest beer on tap is, it's now his "favorite". I had two hoppy beers on tap a few weeks ago, and he proclaimed the wet hopped APA his favorite. Then I put on a beer I call "Hopworks". He proclaimed that his favorite.

Last week, I put on my version of Janet's Brown Ale (which is totally changed from Tasty's recipe due to my supply of ingredients) and Bob is now ignoring the Hopworks and says that "Lorena's Brown Ale" is now his all time favorite.
(recipe in this thread: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/no-chocolate-malt-what-can-i-sub-267453/)

It just occurred to me- his favorite is the one that has the MOST in the keg!!!!!!

I have a Belgian on tap as well, and I don't think he's ever even tasted it. When I put my next IPA on tap, I'm going to label it "Belgian"! That'll keep him out of my favorite!

Isn't there some old saying like "My favorite beer is whatever is in front of me?"

Wasn't there a time he didn't like hoppy beers? I vaguely remember something about that.

Yes, that's the irony. He loved maibocks and English browns. He thought my Dead Guy clone was the best beer in the world. He wouldn't drink anything hoppier than an American amber for years. And suddenly he started adding some IPA to his Fat Squirrel clone. Pretty soon he's calling Lake Erie Monster "pretty hoppy". Now, if it doesn't have got a huge hops aroma and flavor, he calls it "uninteresting".

I make 10 gallon batches of hoppy beers, and 5 gallon batches of others and the hoppy beers definitely disappear much faster!

Yoop... you know the old saying/joke?

What does a prospective bride think when she's in the church?

Aisle, altar, hymn.

I think you corrupted him completely. Good work. Have a homebrew.

It's definitely cyclical, i've already done a near 365 around the hop head thing.

Ha what a dick, try 360.:)

This is true for me too. I've kind of started to move away from hoppy beers. Still love them, but I don't automatically reach for that out of a list. Been looking into stouts and more maltier beers lately.

But most people who don't like bitter beer can not only become used to them, but actually look for them after some initial adjustment. The bitter is replaced by hop flavors.

Similar happened to me this weekend. Went to friends house and after a few beers in the afternoon, started sampling some 100 proof hot danm. It was pretty rough going at first, but after a couple of shots, I tasted the regular stuff and it was like sugar water! Just had to get used to it.

I cycle about every two to three years... this time next year I'll be back into Belgians. Not that I can't drink a Belgian now, its just I want some HOPS NOW!
