I've got a wit that based on the advice of my lhbs I put a blow off tube on. I'm a week and a half into fermentation and I'm wondering if there is any need or reason to switch to an air lock?

Nope. I rarely switch to an airlock. Both do the same thing, and it's way easier to let it ride for me.

The blow-off tube is only required during the heavy krausen stage, when the foam build-up blows off your airlock. Once the foam has subsided, you can switch to a regular (sanitized) airlock if you want, or just leave the blow off tube as dj suggests.

Its generally a lot less awkward to move a carboy with an airlock then one with a blow off hose and bucket when it comes time to bottle.

It's really up to you. Once I pitch yeast, my fermenter is where it's going to stay until I'm ready to rack to something else. I'll usually leave a blowoff on it if I've put one on.

I'm usually worried about switching from an airlock to a blowoff, though. Nothing like that pleasant surprise in the morning!
