Just brewed my first batch this week and took the blow off hose off and switched it with an airlock. I got all of the gunk out of the blow off hose and let it soak in a cleaner for a couple of hours but it still smells like beer. Do I need to keep trying to get the smell out of the hose for it to be sanitary or will it be ok for future uses after I use my starsan on it?

Soak it overnight in a solution of oxy cleaner or PBW. Drain, rinse well, hang it up for a few days to dry. It might still smell like beer, but it'll be fine for the next brew. Anything plastic tends to take in odors--tubing, fermenters, bottling buckets, etc. That's normal.

Personally I would just soak it in a mild bleach solution and then wash it out thoroughly with hot water.

As previous members said, plastic typically takes on odors and can stain easily. My buckets retain odors as well. I usually fill a bucket with water and add a big scoop of Oxyclean Free (the green container) and let my hoses soak overnight, then I rinse well and hang up to dry. I might wipe out my buckets with a paper towel or soft sponge, but the odors seem to stick. Everything gets sanitized well before the next batch.

I've never had an issue with odors transferring from batch to batch.

I switched from IoSan to StarSan because the IoSan has an orange color that stains all my plastic equipment. Still, never had an issue with the stains from batch to batch, but it's kind of a put off.

All plastic should be replaced eventually.
