Blichmann communication cable

Has anyone tried to make their own cable? Just from the picture itself it looks like a usb and jack spliced together and I have plenty spares lying about. Beats paying $30 for the cable.

Blichmann says its RS485 to USB via what appears to be an RJ45 jack on the instrument side. So unless you have an RS485 to USB converter laying around, its probably not cheaper.
