Here's one I brewed last summer. I mashed at 152 degF and used WLP007. When I run it again I'll mash at 150 degF and increase the late hops. I thought it turned out great.

If you have an IPA recipe you already like... just add a half pound of dehusked carafa III to it.

Brewed Northern Brewers black IPA today. It will be at least 6 weeks before I can tell you about it but it had a huge hop schedule.

You can sub any dark malt for the carafa... It's up to you. The only reason I like that is because it is dehusked and you avoid the astringency. I've used roasted barley, and black patent with success.

I really want to try the NB Black IPA kit. On there main page it says a yeast starter is needed but in the directions it doesn't say anything about using a starter. Confused? Does it need a starter?

In February I made one that tknice devised called, Men In Black IPA. He said it was good but it was 10 times better than that. My local bunch of homebrewers thought I was a god when they tasted this. It's going to be in my permanent rotation.

It won't accept my Beersmith file but send me a PM and I'll get it to you if you want it.

Virtually every beer (including this one) needs a starter, unless you use dry yeast, in which case you need to rehydrate that yeast before pitching.

If you want to keep things simple, use US-05 rehydrated.

Here is my latest CDA recipe if your interested (I can't take credit for the base. I pulled it from the database here and made some tweaks):

11lbs. 2 row
1lb. carafa II
1lb. crystal 60L
8.0oz. rye

2 oz. Chinook @60 min
1 oz. Simcoe @ 15 min
1 oz. Amarillo @ flame out
1 oz. simcoe @ flame out

Wyeast 1056 American Ale yeast

1 oz. Amarillo dry hop
1 oz. Simcoe dry hop

I had some Ruthless Rye a few months ago and that inspired me to add the rye to this recipe. Can't even taste the rye so the next time I make this I will either double up on the rye or leave it out completely.

My OG was 1.060 and it finished up at 1.010. My second AG batch. I think my target OG was supposed to be 1.063.

here's my CDA - one of my all time favorite beers i've made. efficiency was a bit low (70%) so keep that in mind - also, this can be kicked up to 90 BUs imo - really great structure to it and nice red highlights;
