Within the past year (say ~ 6 - 8 months ago?) I drank an '88 JW Lees Harvest ale and it was nothing to write home about. If I was to open another one, I would do it late this month or into next month as we progress into fall. The taste of decaying leaves/paper will pair well with the scent of Autumn outside... nomsayin?
The '88 Harvest Ale I had about a year ago was fantastic. No surprise on beers this old, YMMV.
yep. I ran into someone at darkness day 2011? with an 88 harvest that he had purchased at a liquor store ~2008 and it was horrible. Tasted like rotten apple cider. Then I opened the one I brought that has been cellared since the mid 90's and it was absolutely delicious. All about storage

100% agree with this statement but I think after a certain point, packaging failure becomes a variable and old age sets in regardless of how ideal your cellaring might have been.

I noticed that the JW lees bottles I have are significantly more rusted than the Hardy. Whether right or wrong, I blame that on the foil that covers the caps.

The bottles I have/had are all stored the same and there is quite a difference from bottle to bottle. Granted, I have never considered opening 2x of the same year at the same time to really do a bottle variation comparison but the Thomas Hardy from the same year was considerably less oxidized.

Jesus I really need to take inventory and see what I have left. I think I also know what ill be drinking tonight...

For my 30th, a friend in the wine industry tracked down a 1981 bottle of California Merlot. It was pretty bad.

Should work on tracking down some 1981 beers for my 40th.

Then he picked a ****** wine! Don't really know why he went with a Merlot. Even if he just went with an '81 Caymus or Silver Oak Cab, you would've been blown away.

I should clarify -- he also had a Silver Oak Cab, which was fantastic. There were two 1981 wines that night; the more remarkable one was the merlot for its unique awfulness.

Cantillon Brabantiae was always a huge want given my November 1989 birthday, so I was beyond excited when a friend opened a bottle with me.
