If you just made it, you might very well have some overflow. That's a pretty full flask.

Don't worry about the light. You're growing yeast, mot worrying about skunking beer

The light won't hurt it, as there are no hops in it. But you might get some overflow if that yeast goes crazy. Put a piece of wax paper under the flask to protect your stir plate in case it does erupt.

I have it on high. Any idea of when, in hours, it might over flow if it does? Is doing well right now but I'm only 30 minutes in.

One hour to a couple of days, sometimes not at all. You never know, that is up to the yeast.

You only need a good stirring not a great vortex. You might not have to be on high for the stirrer.

The last time I had one like that, I got some overflow somewhere between the six and 12 hour mark (I was asleep). It wasn't a huge mess, but it was messy enough. I think it was with WLP 005.

That's a great starter!! Light isn't an issue! Just watch out for overflow! Pour another beer and keep on. Good luck!

Well the Hanna died after about 45 minutes, brand new out of the box. I was aiming and need 350B yeast cells using the stir plate. What are my options? Do I let it sit for a few days or am I at a slight yeast loss? I'm using double pitch NorCal#1. I could have another stirplate in a few days, would it be too late for this starter?

I would decant and pitch - many report no noticeable effects from slight underpitching.

If you're worried, cold crash and decant, then get it going again with a couple liters of your actual wort and pitch that at high krausen.

I made a quick fix. It's sort of the opposite shape as the erlenmeyer flask but it's spinning. Grabbed an old hdd magnet and computer case fan, Rubbermaid and a brew demon. It's a spinning and there is no where for yeast to settle. I'll let it go over night and hope for the best.

The beer wort is t made yet. I was going to brew tomorrow. The starter was going to run for about 18 hours.View attachment ImageUploadedByHome Brew1445058472.649994.jpgView attachment ImageUploadedByHome Brew1445058505.102333.jpg

If all else fails I can use my other pack of yeast for this brew.

Also the Erlenmeyer flask isn't flat on the bottom, that also added an issue. Perhaps with a better spin plate I'll have better luck.

I like your setup! Starter will turn out fine.
I did a quick sanitize of everything and lost a bit of krausen however, the only issue that may arise is contamination. Fingers crossed.
Hell or high water Im making this freaking beer tomorrow.

Thanks for the confidence boost and help everyone. Its been another tough week...
