Not sure how common this is, but since I tend to buy large quantities when I buy extract, I decided to ease into my next stage in brewing with a PM done BIAB style. Easiest beer I ever made - I have no idea why I didn't do this two years ago.

3.3 Lbs wheat lme
3.3 lbs dark lme (added at 30 min)
2.12 lbs Munich 10L
1 Lbs red wheat
.25 lbs smoked malt
.16 lbs caramel 80
.16 lbs chocolate malt

1 oz German Tradition (.5 oz at 0 min, .5 oz at 30)
Zest of 1 orange (flameout)
Muntons gold ale yeast (6g, rehydrated)

The only snag I had was water volume. When I do specialty grains I add equal parts water and LME at boil, and then top up at the end. This time I mashed with 2.5 gal for 45 min and then "sparged" with 2.5 gallons (heated 2.5 gal to 170 in my big pot and dropped the bag in there after the mash for 20 min).

By the time I got to a boil and added my first extract, I was at about 4-4.25 gallons boil volume - I had to top up several times on my boil and still ended just at 5 gallons and was a bit high on my OG (so I will probably get 4.5 of stronger beer). Guess I forgot to factor for absorption.

Should I be mash/sparging with the full 6.5 - 7 gallons with this amount of grain, or continue to add water with the extract? I could see sticking with the mini mash on a bag idea for a while depending on how this next beer turns out.
