I'm looking for some 20oz bottles with the resealable special tops on them...they're hard to describe, but they aren't the typical bottle tops that require those handle toppers to place the bottle cap on the bottle.

They're the ones that use a hinge and ruber seal with what is usually a cork top to seal the bottles? I think bottles of chimay may come with them? Any idea what the bottle type is called?

I'm looking for the cheapest place to get about 1 dozen of them. While I'm converting my old frig to a kegerator, I'd like the convenience of having a few bottles in the house, and also, when I'd like to share some brew with some friends...I need a transport vessel.

It sounds like you're looking for "swingtops"
You should be able to find them almost anywhere. Check the vendors list and go shopping!

Yea, swing-tops, we have cases of "grolsch", also "fischers", some italian clear lemonade bottles are swingtops, some homebrew stores sell new ones of various sizes, we have a couple of older stoneware type from "fiedlers" (german). Most of these we found at yard sales or wantads, etc. I have heard rumors that Grolsch holds the patent on the swing top?

Maybe not the cheapest but, several breweries still use the swingtop. Rogue, for one, uses ceramic swingtops on their XS lines of beers.

I think these days they're called EZ Cap. They're 16.9 oz (500ml) made in China (what a shocker) with rubber gaskets (which you can buy separately too). I love them for brew, just the right size and they carbonate nicely. Plus no caps to throw away or recycle somehow.

lets see if i can post pictures

Yea we use them alot, but remember most competitions don't allow them, . . . if your into the whole "improvement for others" thing.;)

Ok...last question on the bottles...is it better for the beer to be dark or clear bottles (or does it depend on the beer what your bottle color should be?)

Dark amber glass for the win. Clear or blue or green is not good at blocking the damaging light.
I think mexican styles are ok in other colors because it turns the beer "skunky" which is the style of cervesa. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yup, brown are best. But any of them will work if they are kept in a dark place. We use them all and store in the cellar.
