Hi,

I brewed extract kits years ago and am now getting back into it. I have 1 summer brew under my belt (probably 50 brews years ago).

I want to try this recipe from this post https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=228765&highlight=sculpin

EXTRACT:
6 lbs Dried light malt extract (DME)
1 lbs corn sugar

HOPS
60 minutes
.50 oz warrior
.50 oz Magnum
.25 oz northern brewer
.25 oz columbus

30 minutes
.50 oz crystal
.25 oz centennial
.25 oz Simcoe

0 minutes
1.0 oz Amarillo

DRY HOP
2.0 oz of Amarillo
2.0 oz of Simcoe

YEAST
White labs california Ale yeast wlp001

My newbie questions are.
1. 60, 30 and 0 minutes. 60 means I put them in for the entire boil, 30 means put them in with 30 remaining. Does 0 mean turn off the fire and throw in the hops and leave them until I cool and put in fermentor?

2. The dry hop, do I just pitch these in the fermentor before I close the lid and they stay the entire time? Or do I put them in after some amount of time?

3. Corn Sugar, do i throw that in for the full boil?

Thanks for any insight!

p.s. try mixing a Sculpin Habanero with a Sculpin Grapefruit 50/50. Great taste!

1. yes
2. toss hops into fermenter after fermentation, usually in secondary (sit 3-7 days)
3. anytime, usually at end of boil

I wouldn't recommend a secondary. Like a lot of brewers here, I find them to be unnecessary. Just toss the dry hops in primary and let them do their thing. I dry hop about 5 days..sometimes upwards of 7. I've let it go for 10 days before and had no negative effects. Wait for fermentation to be done and you hit your OG before you dry hop.

Add the corn sugar during the last 15 minutes of the boil. Take your kettle off the heat so you don't scorch the sugar.

This^^^ But I wouldn't toss the hops in until active ferm has passed (3-4 days). Otherwise, the hop aroma that you want to stay in the beer will be lost through the airlock.

I edited it to say "Wait for fermentation to be done and you hit your OG before you dry hop." Must've been too late :drunk:

Yea, don't dry hop too early or it will have been for naught.
